Thirunelli is a temple that is located in the State of Kerala. The temple is ancient and it is located in North Wayanad in the Bramagiri Hill. The temple is located in a place that is surrounded by many mountains and there are forests that are located in and around the place. Thirunelli is known to have once been an important center for trade and it was also a major pilgrim center, despite being located in a remote valley surrounded by jungles.
The temple has been mentioned in many historical records dating back many centuries and there are many archeological sites that are located in and around the temple complex. Recent evidence that has been found suggests that there were two main villages near the Thirunelli Temple. Excavations have found coins that date back to the 9th an 10th century. The temple was clearly an important part of the history of early Kerala.
Papanasini is small stream that is located around 1 km from the temple complex and a dip at this stream is reputed to be able to cleanse the body of all impurities.
The temple pond is called the Panchateertham and there are many carvings and sculptures that can be seen near the holy pond.
It will be very good in Dec since it is off season and there will be less crowd - however you should be able to bear the chill. Being a bangalorean that should not be a problem.
Thirunelli By Air
The nearest airport is located at Kozhikode which is around 80 km from the place. The only way to reach the place from the airport is through taxis and these can be hired from outside the airport. Taxis cost approximately Rs 1000 for the trip. This is the best option for those who are arriving by air.
Thirunelli By Train
The nearest railway station is also located in Kozhikode and one can hire taxis from just outside the railway station. The best option is to book a cab through the hotels as they are a much safer option. Travelling by train is the most comfortable option and there are train services from various parts of the country to Kozhikode.
Thirunelli By Bus
There are frequent buses that are available from places such as Mysore and Kozhikode to Wayanad District. Ticket rates depend on the distance.
