Sindhudurg is a fortress which occupies an islet in the Arabian Sea, just off the coast of Maharashtra in western India. The fortress lies on the shore of Malvan town of Sindhudurg District in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, south of Mumbai.
Sindhudurg was built by the great Maratha warrior King Shivaji in 1664. Shivaji selected the strategic rocky island location, then known as 'Kurte' for the fort,himself to counter foreign forces, and to keep the nearby Siddis of Murud-Janjira in check.Also five khandi of lead was poured into its foundation by Shivaji Maharaj.

 

The conditions in the Sindhudurg region are semi tropical and humid. The climate is predominantly warm, especially during the summer. Due to the proximity to the seas, the place gets a good amount of rainfall during the monsoon season. The winter season is generally mild and it is a good time to visit the place.

Tropical conditions can be expected during the summer season. Temperatures range from a minimum of 32 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 38 °C. May is the hottest part of the year and the humidity is extremely high during this time. Summer season is from mid February to May.

Monsoon season is from June to September. Rainfall is extensive during this period and travelling during this season might be difficult. The place gets rainfall from the South West Monsoon. October and November constitute the Post-Monsoon period and conditions are slightly humid.

Winter season is from late November to Mid February. Climatic conditions are much cooler during this period and temperatures are in the mid twenties for most part. The maximum temperature during the winter months is around 32°C. December and January are the coolest months of the year. It is ideal to visit during this time.

By Air: The nearest airport is located at Dabolim and for those who are arriving by air, this is the best option. The airport is around 80 km from the place and can be reached easily through taxis.

By Train: Sindhudurg has a rail station and a few trains stop at the station. However the closest major stations are at Sawantawdi and Kudal located around 35 km and 25 km from Sindhudurg respectively. The place is located along the Konkan Railway line.

By Bus:State run buses are available from places such as Mumbai, Panaji, Pune, Kolhapur and Ratnagiri. Buses are the cheapest option and they are frequent as well. They can be boarded from the appropriate bus stops of the respective cities. However, they may be crowded and they are not comfortable for long journeys.
