Secunderabad About this sound pronunciation (help·info) (Telugu: , Urdu: popularly known as twin city of Hyderabad is located just north of Hyderabad. Named after Sikandar Jah, the third Nizam of the Asaf Jahi dynasty, Secunderabad was founded in the 18th century as a British cantonment. Separated from Hyderabad by Hussain Sagar, today Secunderabad is no longer a separate city and has become part of Hyderabad. Both the cities are collectively known just as Hyderabad outside the state and together they form the sixth largest metropolis in India. Though they are called twins, the cities have a different history and present fusion of different cultures, with Secunderabad having developed under direct British rule until 1948 and Hyderabad as the capital of Nizam's princely state.

Secunderabad - the twin city of Hyderabad - was founded as British cantonment after Treaty of Subsidiary Alliance was signed by the Nizams and the British East India Company in 1798[2]. Named after Sikandar Jah, the third Nizam of the Asaf Jahi dynasty, Secunderabad until recently had its own municipality and city government. Secunderabad was the area in Hyderabad which was under the control of the British. Secunderabad was formed in 1806, after an order was signed by the Nizam alloting the land north of Hussain Sagar to setup the British Cantonment[3]. The twin cities are separated by the man-made Hussain Sagar lake, which was built during the reign of the Qutub Shahis in the 16th century.
Secunderabad was exempted from customs duty on imported good thus making trade very profitable. Various new markets such as Regimental Bazaar and General Bazaar were created. After Sepoy Mutiny construction of a seven metre high wall was started at Trimulgherry and completed in 1867

Secunderabad Railway Station one of the largest in India which is also the zonal headquarters of South Central Railway  was established in 1874. The King Edward Memorial Hospital, now known as – Gandhi Hospital was established in 1851. Unlike Hyderabad, the official language of Secunderabad was English.

Sir Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during World War II, was posted in Secunderabad during the 1880s as a subaltern in the British Army[6]. Sir Ronald Ross conducted his initial research on the cause of malaria in the city of Secunderabad[7].. The original building is today called the Sir Ronald Ross Institute and is located on the Minister Road. Secunderabad Municipality was formed in 1945 and in 1950 this was upgraded to Secunderabad Corporation along with Hyderabad Corporation. In 1964 both these corporations were merged to form a single Municipal Corporation[8]. Today Secunderabad is part of the Hyderabad district. Secunderabad celebrated two hundred years of its formation in 2006. Civil Jail now known as Old Jail complex near Monda Market is a heritage building[9].

Parts of Secunderabad is under the jurisdiction of the Secunderabad Cantonment Board due to large presence of military units. Adjoining Hyderabad is the mostly civilian portion of Secunderabad which is commercially active and centrally located. The popular neighbourhoods in Secunderabad are Paradise Circle, Trimulgherry, Marredpally, Sitaphalmandi, Kharkhana, Ranigunj, etc. Begumpet Airport is close to Secunderabad and served both the cities until early 2008.

 

In order to have pleasant trip, the climatic conditions of the place to be visited should be known in advance. Hyderabad is a city that has a moderate climate throughout the year. The best time to visit this city is after the monsoons i.e., October to March. The summers can get really hot and one can see temperatures soaring upto 45o Celsius. Evenings are usually pleasant thanks to the cool sea breeze. At night, the temperature usually drops down to 25o - 30o Celsius.

The city does not experience harsh winters and it becomes moderately cool towards the end of the year. The maximum temperature remains at a pleasant 22o - 25o Celsius. The minimum can go down till 13o Celsius. The monsoons are from June to September after which the weather becomes very pleasant and enjoyable. The average annual rainfall in Hyderabad is around 80 - 90 centimeters. The place also witnesses cyclonic depressions every now and then due to the low-pressure trough forming over the plateau.

Reach Secunderabad by Air
The city of Secunderabad is in close proximity to the Hyderabad airport. This airport is divided into international and domestic terminals with the former being known as Rajiv Gandhi International Terminal. Several regular international flights operate from this international terminal. The latter is known as N.T. Rama Rao Domestic Terminal and a large number of domestic flights operate from there.

Reach Secunderabad by Road
The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, which is known as APSRTC in short, has a well-maintained system of roads in the state and links the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad to a large number of places. The head office of this corporation is also situated in Secunderabad.

Reach Secunderabad by Rail
The head office of the Southern and Central railways is situated in Secunderabad itself. Numerous trains ply from this railway station in Secunderabad. Apart from this railway station, there are two other railway stations in its twin city, Hyderabad. These are known as Kacheguda Railway Station and Hyderabad Railway Station or Nampally. Secunderabad is an important railway station where all the up and down trains from Hyderabad halt.
