Ratnāgiri is a port city on the Arabian Sea coast in Ratnagiri district in the southwestern part of Maharashtra, India. The district is a part of Konkan.

The Sahyadri mountains border Ratnagiri to the east. Heavy rainfall results in highly eroded landscape in the coastal region, but fertile alluvial valleys in the region produce abundant rice, coconuts, cashew nuts, and fruits, "Hāpus"mangoes being one of the main fruits. Fishing is an important industry in Ratnagiri.

A few illustrious Indians, including "Lokmānya" Bal Gangadhar Tilak, a prime leader in the nation's freedom movement in the British Raj days; Bharat Ratna "Maharshi" Dhondo Keshav Karve, a social reformer and educationist; and Wrangler Raghunath Purushottam Paranjpe, a mathematician and educationist, were born in Ratnagiri or its vicinity.

Ratnagiri has also been featured in Amitav Ghosh's novel, 'The Glass Palace.'

One could have a trip to this place at any time during a whole year, but the best time to visit the place is in the month of March to June in a year. Being apart from beating off the city high temperature, one can enjoy and take pleasure in the well known 'Alphonso mangos', which is the specialty of this district. If it is not possible in the summer one can have a trip in the month of October to December as well.

Railway Station

The Ratnagiri railway station is an important part of the Konkani railway system and there are many transport options to the city from the station. Travelers who are arriving by train can hire taxis or auto rickshaws from the railway station to the city. Prices are negotiable and there may be fixed rates for certain places. 

There are a few local travel options that a traveler can choose from in Ratnagiri. Tourists can opt for taxis, buses and auto rickshaws. 

Taxi

There are many private taxi operators in Ratnagiri. They are usually available from taxi stands that are located across the town. Taxis can also be booked through the hotels. They charge around Rs 7 per km for non A/C taxis. Taxis are a good option to get around as they are comfortable. 

Bus

Local government buses are available in Ratnagiri. They are often crowed and uncomfortable. However tickets are cheap and they cost between Rs 10 to 20.
