Leh,was the capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Ladakh, now the Leh District in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Leh, with an area of 45,110 km2, is the second largest district in the country (after Kutch, Gujarat) in terms of area.

The town is still dominated by the now ruined Leh Palace, former mansion of the royal family of Ladakh, built in the same style and about the same time as the Potala Palace. Leh is at an altitude of 3524 meters (11,562 ft). National Highway 1D connects it to Srinagar in the northwest.

The best time to visit Ladakh is during summers. The summers in Leh Ladakh stretch from June to September. During this period, Ladakh as well as the nearby areas experience warm and sunny days (with temperature around 20-30 deg C) and delightful nights. For those who are interested in trekking, the peak season for Ladakh travel consists of the months of July/August. Around this time only, the passes on the Manali-Leh Highway and the Srinagar-Leh Highway become motorable and the tourist start coming soon after. The winter season is not ideal for travel to Leh Ladakh. This is because during winters, the temperature in Ladakh falls to below zero degrees often and the weather is quite cold and harsh. Also, because of heavy snowfall, the roads become unmotorable in winters.

By Air:

Reaching Leh by air is extremely smooth and does not take too much of time. Leh is directly linked with Delhi by air and there are regular flights which link the two places. Within 65 minutes, one can reach Leh from the capital of India. Apart from this, one can also get flight service from Leh to Srinagar once a week .

By Rail:

Reaching Leh by rail is a cumbersome process. Kalka is the nearest station and from Kalka one can easily get a taxi or bus for reaching Manali. From there, one has to hire a Tata Sumo or can look for bus service to reach Leh.

By Road:

There are two well known routes which link Leh .The Srinagar-Leh Highway and the Manali -Leh Highway are the two routes. From June to October, these routes remain open. The availability of regular bus service and Tata Sumo make travelling by road possible if not an enjoyable experience.It takes about two days to reach the place by Leh. The only compensation for the tiring experience is the breathtaking views.
