Jammu is one of the three administrative divisions within Jammu and Kashmir, the northernmost state in India. Jammu city is the largest city in Jammu and the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu City is also known as "City of Temples" as it has many temples and shrines, with glittering shikhars soaring into the sky, which dot the city’s skyline, creating the ambiance of a holy and peaceful city - a Hindu holy city.

Home to some of the most popular Hindu shrines, such as Vaishno Devi, Jammu is one of the most famous pilgrimage tourism destinations in India. The majority of Jammu's 2.7 million population practices Hinduism,while Islam and Sikhism enjoy a strong cultural heritage in the region. Due to relatively better infrastructure, Jammu has emerged as the main economic center of the state

 

Jammu has a pleasant and cool climate most of the period during the whole year with a subtropical climate. Summers are hot and sweaty while winters are cold, mostly snow falls are observed. Temperatures can touch a soaring level to 45°C in summer and dip down to less than 4°C during nights in winter. Rainfalls are observed during June to August. Autumn (September to November) is flowering season and Jammu is very attractive during that period.

Lohri, also known as Makara Sankranti, held during middle of January is an auspicious festival during which many tourists throng to Jammu. Apart from this people celebrate Ramnavami (March) and Deepvali (October) with much enthusiasm.

Best time to visit is from September to March, avoiding hot summer days and rainy period.

How to reach Jammu and Kashmir by Air:

Jammu and Kashmir is very well connected by road, rail and air. The three airports in the state namely Srinagar, Jammu and Leh connect it to the major Indian cities. Regular flights operate from Srinagar to Jammu, Delhi and Mumbai. The flights of Indian Airlines operate from Delhi, Mumbai and Jammu to Srinagar. Among the private airlines, Jet Airways also connects these destinations.

How to reach Jammu and Kashmir by Rail:

 

Srinagar is the most important railway station of the state, which is connected to the major Indian cities including Kanyakumari, Delhi, Pune, Kolkata and Mumbai. The other important stations are Katra, Udhampur and Jammu.

How to reach Jammu and Kashmir by Road:

 Srinagar is well linked by an extensive network of roads to Jammu, which finally connects to some of the most important areas of North India including Delhi, Chandigarh, Ambala, Jalandhar, Pathankot, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Shimla and Manali.
