Nashik is one of the most important cities of Northern Maharashtra.  The city has become the center of attraction because of its beautiful surroundings and cool and pleasant climate. Nashik city is located in India's state of Maharashtra . The city is in the north west of Maharashtra some 185 km from Mumbai and 202 km from Pune. This city popularly known as the 'wine capital of India' or the 'Grape city' is located in the Western Ghats, on the western edge of the Deccan Peninsula. Nasik is the administrative headquarters of both Nashik district and Nashik division. This city is famous for its picturesque surrounding and the pleasant climataure.

Known as the religious center of India, Nashik is one of the four most holiest places in India where the drops of nectar fell when demigods and demons fought over it. It is located on the banks of river Godavari encircled by nine hills- Durga, Ganesh, chitraghanta, Pandav, Dinger Ali Mhasarul, Jogwanda, Pathanpura, and Konkani. Nashik is one city which rose to name in the mythological era and has carried its aura to the present age withstanding the test of time. The greatest of all shows on the land of India, the world renowned Maha Kumbhmela also happens in this city. It happens every 12 years and attracts tourists from all over the world. The important aspect of Kumbh mela is the astonishing unity amidst diversity that occurs in this sacred occasion.

As the legend has it, one of the greatest hero of Indian epics, Lord Rama, along with wife Sita and brother Laxmana stayed here for a while during their 14 year exile. It is from here Ravana abducted Sita and took her to his palace on the island of Lanka, now known as Sri Lanka. It was here Laxman cut off the nak (nose) of Ravana's sister Surpanakha, thus was the the name Nashik arrived on. The temples, the ghats on the Godavari river have made Nashik the holiest place for Hindus. The holy events like the Namavali, Rath Yatra, Nagbali add many folds to the already large number of pilgrims visiting the Sacred land of Nashik. Nashik is literally the land of temples in India. It has been a home to many of the most famous and visited temples of India. Few are the most important temples that are not to be missed.

Trimbakeshwara Temple

This is one of the 12 sacred jyotirlingas. This temple which is devoted to Lord Shiva was built in 1730 by Baji Rao Peshwa. It is said that the source of Godavari river lies few hundred feet above the temple. Although the Non-Hindu are not allowed inside but they can go up till the steps and take a look inside. one will see the combination of both Malwa and Meru style in its architecture. It is not difficult to reach this temple as there are regular bus service from Nashik to Trimbakeshwara Temple.

Saptashringi Devi Temple

This a major temple devoted to the Saptashringi goddess (Seven pinnacled goddess). She is one of the forms of Shakti. She is considered to be the destroyer of evil and is depicted with 18 hands.

Kalaram Temple

Kalaram temple is a temple built by Peshwas and is an important pilgrimage site. This temple is famous for the great procession that are held here during Ramnavami, Chitra Padwa ( New year day for Hindus) and Dasara. This temple is completely build of black stone and the tip is made up of 2 tons of gold. After a Satyagraha by Dr. B.R Ambedkar in 1930, Harijans were also allowed into the temple.

Sundernarayan Temple

Sundernarayan temple is a marvel built in 1756 by Gangadhar Yashwant Chandrachud. There are two mandaps which have enchanting works of architecture and the round dome is made of beautiful little ornamental cordon. You will find very precise work of carvings as well. When you move towards Godavri, on the way you will find a lake named Badarika Sangam pond which also finds a mention in the holy book of Dhyanasheri. But the most remarkable thing about this temple is the angle at which it is built. On every march 21st, rays of rising sun first fall directly on the Idols and to witness this extra-ordinary event many devotees throng to this temple on that day.

Marvels of the Divine Land


The northern part of Godavari is called Panchavati. It is called so because of the the five Banyan trees that are there. The importance of this place is that Ram along with Sita and Laxmana stayed here for a while making it a holy place.

Sita Gupha

This is the place from where Ravana abducted Sita and took her to the island of Lanka. This is a small cave where you have to crawl into the cave to see the deities of Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita. The grove of large banyan trees near the cave is a major attraction for the tourists.


It is here Lakshmana cut off the nose of Ravana's sister Surpanakha. This was once a part of the sacred Dandakaranya forest. It is quite close to the Sita Gupha.

Dudhsagar Waterfalls

Located around 8 km to the west of Nashik near Someshwar Temple, Dudhsagar Waterfalls is a very popular picnic spot among the residents of Nashik. The best time to visit the place is just after the monsoon season as there is ample water in the falls.

Pandav Leni Caves

Located on a wedge up in Trivashmi hill, it is around 8 km down the city on Mumbai-Agra highway. It is a group of 24 Buddhist Caves which were dig out around 1 AD. The walls of the caves are full of exquisite carvings.

The Maha Kumbhmela

The Maha Kumbhmela is The most awaited and the most outstanding event India witnesses. Kumbhmela is a religious festival which is a world known event and is celebrated every 12 years. This spectacular event is celebrated in four famous pilgrim sites, Allahabad, Haridwar, ujjain, and Nasik. Nasik is the biggest of them all with over three and a half million devotees attending it to take a holy dip in the sacred Gangothri. It is said that, to save the nectar from Demons the Gods had to stay on earth for 12 heavenly days which are equal to 12 earthly years, that is why this grand Kumbhmela is celebrated every 12 years. The exact time of the celebration are decided according to the position of stars and planets.

The next Maha Kumbh mela in Nasik is slated to be held in 2015 starting on August 15th till September 23rd. Kumbha mela is not just a ritual that id followed blindly, it is a very scientific and thought through tradition of the Hindu culture. In the month of Kumbh mela, residents of Nasik are in a festive mood and they put all there daily chores aside to enjoy the color and brightness of the city.

Getting There

By Air

The nearest commercial airport is in Mumbai around 182 kilometers away. It takes around 5 hrs. by road from Mumbai to reach Nasik.

By Train

Nasik road railway station is an important link in the central railway network. The station is around 8 km northeast from the main center. From the station, you have to rely on the local transport.

By Road

Nasik is well connected to all major adjoining cities by road. The city is around 185 km from Mumbai, 202 km from Pune. State transport buses from other major states like Mumbai, Gujarat and Karnataka operate to Nasik with appreciable frequency. This eliminates any threats of delays while traveling. The central bus stand is located at downtown road. Many private commercial transportations also ply on the routes to Nasik from adjoining cities.

Local Transport

In Nasik, auto rickshaws are the prominent player in local transportation. Although they are metered, but they are generally not put in use, so the fares have to be negotiated. Nashik city does not have an airport of its own. The airport that falls nearest from its periphery is the Chhatrapati Shivaji international Airport of Mumbai. By Rail

The railway station at Nashik is counted amongst the major stations on the Central Railway. It is serviced by almost all the express and fast trains that go through the region. By Road
