Delhi,and also by the official name National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT), is the largest metropolis (by Area) in India and the second-largest metropolis (by Population) in India. More than 12.25 million nhabitants in city and with over 16.5 million residents Including NCR Region(Noida,Gurgaon,Faridabad Ghaziabad etc), it is the eighth largest metropolis in the world by population. The name Delhi is often also used to include some urban areas near the NCT, as well as to refer to New Delhi, the capital of India, which lies within the NCT. The NCT is a federally administered union territory. Delhi also houses Asia's largest planned residential colony, Dwarka Sub City. The National Capital Region (India) or commonly referred to as NCR in India is a name for the conurbation or metropolitan area which encompasses the entire National Capital Territory of Delhi as well as urban areas ringing it in neighbouring states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. With a total area of about 33,578 km2 (12,965 sq mi), it is the world's largest urban agglomeration.

Located on the banks of the River Yamuna, Delhi has been continuously inhabited since at least the 6th century BC. After the rise of the Delhi Sultanate, Delhi emerged as a major political, cultural and commercial city along the trade routes between northwest India and the Indo-Gangetic plains.It is the site of many ancient and medieval monuments, archaeological sites and remains. In 1639, Mughal emperor Shahjahan built a new walled city in Delhi which served as the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1649 to 1857.

After the British East India Company gained control of much of India during the 18th and 19th centuries, Calcutta became the capital both under Company rule and under the British Raj, until George V announced in 1911 that it was to move back to Delhi. A new capital city, New Delhi, was built to the south of the old city during the 1920s. When India gained independence from British rule in 1947, New Delhi was declared its capital and seat of government. As such, New Delhi houses important offices of the federal government, including the Parliament of India.

Owing to the migration of people from across the country, Delhi has grown to be a cosmopolitan metropolis. Its rapid development and urbanisation, coupled with the relatively high average income of its population, has transformed Delhi. Today Delhi is a major cultural, political, and commercial center of India.

The cold wave from the Himalayan region makes winters very chilly. New Delhi is placed at an elevation of 215 meters. In addition to this, most of the festivals in New Delhi take place in the months of October to March, which adds to the beauty of the city.The best time to visit Delhi is during February and March, during the pleasant spring season when flowers are in bloom, and from August to November, after the monsoon rains have reduced the intensity of the summer heat.

Climate

Delhi's climate varies greatly. It is very hot in summer (April - July) and cold in winter (December - January). The average temperature can vary from 25°C to 46°C during the summer and 22°C to 5°C during the winter.

In summer adequate precautions need to be taken, to avoid the intense heat, such as wearing light cotton clothing, wearing a hat or sunshade while going outdoors and drinking plenty of liquids. In winter, wearing warm or woolen clothing will protect you from the cold.

By Train:
The railway network connects Delhi to the all major and, nearly, all the minor destinations in India. The three important railway stations of Delhi are New Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi Railway Station and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station.

By Road:
Delhi is well connected, by a network of roads and national highways, with all the major cities in India. The three major bus stands in Delhi are Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) at Kashmiri Gate, Sarai Kale-Khan Bus Terminus and Anand Vihar Bus Terminus.
